This candidate has done Project Management in Iran for Peugeot, developing the 206 Model with a trunk (not the conventional hatchback) thought that they were worthy to present to the KB/ Sigma HR team for evaluation.

The candidate is currently on a spousal visa that ends December 2012. The candidate’s spouse was seconded from Schneider Electric in Iran to work in Macquarie Park in Sydney. Schneider has applied for Australian Permanent residency for the couple and the candidate advised this is due for issue in August 2012.

Primarily I would like to draw attention to the candidate’s work over the 11 years at Sapco and in particular their Project Management in procurement for the various Peugeot 206 models for manufacture for the global market in joint venture with Peugeot, France.

The candidate was responsible for the tender process and contract management of parts and components that included trunk, bumper, rear mirrors, axel and suspension systems, body parts related to the trunk, dashboard, trim, mats, carpet and lights. Overall 300 new parts had to be developed for the 206 with trunk.

The candidate had a team of 8, reported to the Senior Project Manager and the project elements the candidate managed had a cost of $13M AUD with a life cycle of 36 months. When completed, the project areas in the candidate’s portfolio was 98% of the allocated budget.

Overall the whole of vehicle project cost was $150M AUD.

Various companies in Germany, France and Iran were invited to tender and the candidate was responsible for this process and helped make the final selections and ongoing management of the warranty agreements of the part manufacture.

However the candidate was integral through the whole process from:

•	Concept sketch
•	Design
•	Clay Modeling
•	Prototyping
•	Installation of retype on vehicle shell
•	Finalization of the SLA
•	Building and assessment of the mass production tooling
•	Establishment of quality targets
•	Managing the stage gate process through to commercialization
•	Issuing the orders for mass manufacture.
•	Sign off after the completion of the commissioning phase
•	Monitoring the SLA in respect to warranty

The candidate was also responsible for the set up of second and third tier suppliers as a contingency plan though these relationships were not true partnerships just back up planning.

Please contact Luke McDonald on 02 9421 5900 for more details about this candidate quoting reference number CM-120570-LM

Arriving on time dressed in smart casual business attire presenting a very professional image. Holding conversation and eye contact well, open and smiling persona, engages well and can drive the conversation when required.

With a university background in Science, Chemical Engineering, further studies within International Business, this candidate has a great overview of multi functions within and organisation such as Procurement, Supplier Management, Manufacturing, Supply Chain through to the Consumer.

In respect to Skills, an insight in relation to the Quality Function, great exposure and achievements within Beverage Category, this candidate’s outlook is end to end from inbound Raw Materials through to FPS and Consumer Complaints.

Word speak is around engagement at a Manufacturing Level i.e. Production and Lone Supervisor level through to Documentation Systems Management. Examples are based off working with Key Suppliers on Compliance [ i.e. Flavours, Sugars, Barley, Meats, packaging and Labelling through to Cleaning Chemicals ].

When it comes to Food Processing knowledge, great solid examples on working around Cold Fill Beverage, High Speed Packaging [ Cans, Bottles and Flexi Pouches ] & Pasteurization … to this Cook, Hot Fill, Retort processing insights to name a few.

Note; a key insight and issue to consider … this candidate does not have WQA, SQF or BRC exposure. Australian FSANZ and Quality Systems exposure is learning … a management / leadership role is out of their reach, however a support role that would allow 6 to 12 months exposure I believe will produce a valuable employee.

In summary, an awesome young candidate, keen and looking to grow …. at best their skills set are relevant to Australia can be described as learning … well worth the time to consider, interview for potential Contract, Permanent opportunities.

Increased Activity in Engineering Sector

Many of you will be aware that Technical Focus is only a small recruitment firm. The fact that we are focused on manufacturing, supply chain and technical management roles only and the fact that we predominantly only deal with FMCG, food, pharmaceutical, and hi tech companies in Sydney and Melbourne at the moment means that we can pick up on a new recruitment trend very quickly.

It’s been very disappointing over the last ten years to see so many manufacturing sites close down in Australia due to globalisation etc and I’m sure that most of us involved in this industry have our own opinions on what the government could do to improve/support the situation without just quoting “free market” to us.

The good news is that we have seen a flurry of activity in engineering recruitment over the last six months. Such roles as:

In Pharmaceuticals:

Process Validation and new equipment installation (due to product recalls), commissioning contracts

In Food:

Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance Team Leaders and overall Site Engineering Manager positions due to lack of current leadership and ability to manage/drive cultural change processes in alignment with competency based awards and EBA renegotiations. There have also been three or four major Packaging Development Manager roles pop up in the last month with a particular focus on bedding in new product/packaging runs into manufacturing without adversely affecting efficiencies.

In metals:

Again Modern Maintenance Managers have been the flavour of the last 6 months to drive cultural based change through the operation.

In Hi Tech and Electronics:

This sector has been strong for the last three years and there is a constant need for Production Engineers to set up new lines and continuously improve others. Testing Engineers also seem to be highly sought after.

- How did they finish off the interview?

- What were your thoughts about the client(s)?

- Do you see any drawbacks to the position?

- How do you feel about the position overall?

*******************************************

Preparing the shortlisted candidates for an offer

Ask questions such as these throughout the final stages and at every opportunity and phone call with the candidates:

- What are your salary expectations now you fully understand the role? (again pick up on any variances)

- What other offers, applications do you have in the pipeline? (qualify why they are of interest and ask how your role fits in their preferences)

- So, if I was to offer you the job tomorrow on $X + Xsuper etc would you accept?

(the “TRIAL CLOSE” is THE most powerful component of this whole process)

- What would you do with that other pending offer if I was to offer you this today?

- How long are you willing to delay the other offer?

- How would you rate your leaning on this role compared to the other pending offer/s? (ask the to use 90/10 or 50/50 etc and this will give you a very good feel as to where they are at)

What are the other danger signals to look out for in the process?

Difficult to pin down for interview times, poor punctuality, poor reliability in calling you back, too many objections to over come in explaining the role, some reluctance to provide reference checks, variance in previous or existing salary package and or expectations, don’t jump at verbal offer, lukewarm reactions to good news, delay in hearing back on how resignation went, unable to confirm start date etc. etc.
